1. How did you get into IT?
As a child, I always liked computers. I loved playing games and can remember playing with old computers. At school, I was good at math so I was drawn to IT and the more I learned about it, the more I liked it. I started with coding in C/C++ and eventually that led me to networking and QoS Security.
2. What do you like and dislike most about your job?
I honestly love every aspect of my job. I am passionate about networking and security, but I especially love staying on top of trends and innovations in technology. I may be tempted to say that I don’t enjoy the stress, but even when there are critical issues, I enjoy the problem solving.
3.What do you like to do outside of work?
I have a wife and small son, and we love the relaxed Aussie lifestyle. We like to camp, BBQ and spend time with friends. When I have a spare moment, I try to research new technologies at home. I know it helps my clients but it’s also a hobby of mine to research innovation and learn new things.
4. If you weren’t in your current job, what would you be doing?
At high school I was good at maths and physics. I was encouraged by the teachers to become a physicist and I actually spent a lot of time researching Einstein’s works.
5. What do you think will change the most in the way that we work with IT in the future?
I predict two things. Firstly, I think security will change and grow as a result of cyber-attacks. The prevalence of the attacks will drive more funding into this area and I think we will see a change in the way we protect ourselves. We seem to feel safe if we have not experienced an attack, but I believe the question is not if it will happen, but when.
Secondly, I believe that Software Defined Networking and automation will bring about a major shift for us high-level technical resources. Business as usual is about to change.
